All about the Module 1

Access requirements for Module 1

The access requirements for Module 1 are those for the Master's:

Access qualification: graduates, diploma holders and/or graduates in Medicine or Nursing. Persons with a foreign university degree that in their country has legal attributions for healthcare.
Experience: no prior work experience is required for admission.

Module 1 can be validated if you have taken any of the following postgraduate courses: Fundamentals in Critical Care and Emergencies, and Fundamentals in Critical Medicine and Intensive Therapy.

Objectives and Competencies

Module 1 aims to consolidate the theoretical foundations, as well as learn advanced knowledge in the care of the acutely ill patient, in the prehospital setting, emergencies, and their definitive treatment in the intensive care unit.

It addresses the use of monitoring and organic support devices, the pathophysiological aspects of critical illness, and the clinical and therapeutic approach to the patient.

The essential competencies of this Module are:

Identify, interpret, synthesize and prioritize clinical problems of critically ill patients based on complex data and observations.
Understand the pathophysiological aspects and apply different diagnostic and therapeutic techniques in the disease and its complications.
Address the structures and interrelationships of the healthcare system that cares for the critically ill and emergencies, understanding the relationship and cooperation models.
Apply and transfer critical and analytical thinking in the approach to scientific evidence of the pathologies of the acutely ill patient.

Methodology and Teaching Resources

For Module 1, the following methodology and teaching resources are used:

Critical Care and Emergencies Book: Book «Critical Care and Emergencies» edited and published by Elsevier (2nd Ed. 2021 ISBN 9788 490228227), written by the Master's professors. A copy will be provided to each enrolled student.
Theoretical content capsules: The Virtual Campus (Moodle) is an educational tool dedicated to the management of teaching content, and is the means of communication with the teacher and among students.
On the Virtual Campus you will find short-duration (20-30 min) audiovisual capsules of theoretical content offered on-demand online, and they are organized by Thematic Areas and Blocks and levels of complexity (1 - basic, 2 - medium, 3 - advanced). The theoretical content follows the continuum of care of the critical patient.
Likewise, other reference materials and bibliographic references of interest will be hosted on the Virtual Campus.
Agoras: At the end of each Thematic Area of Module 1, a synchronous meeting called “Agora” will be held. It is a training activity in which, through an interactive and dynamic analysis of real clinical cases, basic and advanced theoretical doubts that the student has previously worked on autonomously are resolved. These sessions will be face-to-face at the University of Barcelona and will also be broadcast virtually through the Zoom platform (they will not be recorded).
Self-assessments: On the Virtual Campus, for each topic, there are self-assessments of knowledge.

Follow-up, assistance, and passing criteria

Detail of the sections for passing Module 1:

Content viewing: At least 80% of the theoretical content offered must be viewed.
Online Knowledge Assessment: After each thematic area, an individual online test will be carried out, with multiple-choice questions.
Attendance at Agoras: You must attend (in person or online) 80% of the sessions.
Theoretical Foundations Exam: A multiple-choice test must be passed each semester.
